Scriptural Reference: Habakkuk 3:16-19
“When I
heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered
into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of
trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his
troops.
“Although
the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor
of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be
cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:
“Yet I
will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the GOD of my salvation.
‘The LORD
GOD is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make
me walk upon my high places. (To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.)”
Take a moment with me and read these scriptures. Before you grab your survival kit and tilt into full panic mode see this context. These scriptures clearly depict a time of national sorrow, famine, peril, and uncertainty. Our headlines resound with global panic and government leaders are scrambling to keep an ever-evolving sense of normal for humanity. What can be clearly stated is that right now, today, the power struggle between nations of people, lands, weapons, and wills may well become, in a singular defining moment, a time of suffering prolonged and deeply personal.
Looking
again at the scriptures, the last words, of the last verse seem out of place and
yet today these words are appropriate.
‘… to the chief singer on my stringed instruments.’
This group
of scriptures is a song.
These scriptures are not a lament or dirge to be droned and bellowed from hearts
without hope. Rather, this song is a declaration, a pronouncement of communion,
dependence, covenant, and grace to endure. This is a clarion call to rebel
against fear and an invitation to the reader to choose joy. As surely as any
decision is made by faith and hope today, and right now, these ‘perilous times’
demand a choice.
What you
believe is essential.
Whom you
believe in will maintain the tone and posture of your heart and thoughts.
What you
choose to focus on becomes your atmosphere, climate, and inner environment.
Whether
you have a vote, a voice of influence, or you are a majority of one: choose
wisely and well.
